Joanne's Dance Extension's Artistic Director, Joanne Zavisa, has been involved in dance education from the very beginning of the craft's arrival to our area. As a founding member of Masters of Dance Arts, Joanne found inspiration. Passionate about creating moving works of art, individual self-expression, and proper training— Joanne's love for the art of dance flourished into a love for teaching it. Joanne created magic with Masters of Dance Arts from 1975 until 1984, when she split off to create something more. Joanne was inspired to create a legacy; but she didn't know exactly how large of a footprint she would leave on dance education until years later.
In 1984, Joanne established a dance studio like no other: Joanne's Dance Extension. Rooted in training lasting dance technique, compassion, confidence, time-management, dedication, and artistic expression; Joanne's Dance Extension built a strong foundation for our local dancers to grow from. This foundation has led many of Joanne's students to perform professionally not only across the country— but across the globe. Other students of Joanne have gone on to become dance educators themselves— some of which even opening their own dance education facilities! Every single studio in the local area has a connection with Joanne and her passion for dance education.
Talk about a legacy!
Our students have gone on to have multiple successful careers, taking the lessons they've learned within our studio walls with them into their adult lives. Our alumni have:

Specializing in educating dancers of all ages, Joanne's Dance Extension instills a love and appreciation for the art of dance on the
simplest of terms: Joy. Our students are always happy to come to class, and parents can rest assured that their child's long-term health is not being compromised during each instructional session.
We are passionate about providing instruction that is rooted in kinesiology, taking care to ensure the safety of our dancers' bodies long-term. We will never push a student to perform risky tricks or movements that could cause damage to their joints or muscles, and strive to provide instruction that improves each dancers' strength and flexibility while prioritizing safe dance movement habits.
At Joanne's Dance Extension; we stick to our traditional teaching methods. We are known for our age appropriate music, costuming, and choreography. We won't compromise giving our students what they need to be learning for their age and length of study in order to appeal to a certain audience. With a philosophy that respects the individuality of each student, your children will flourish!

Our instructors have a range of experience levels, from those who have recently graduated with a degree in dance to those with decades of professional experience. All of our instructors are highly qualified and passionate about teaching dance.
Recreational classes are designed for dancers who want to learn and have fun, while competitive classes are for dancers who are interested in competing in dance competitions. Competitive classes typically require more commitment and training hours. Our competitive dancers will have additional choreographed pieces.
Yes, we have a performance team for dancers who are interested in more intensive training and performance opportunities. Auditions are typically held in the summer and more information can be given when talking to our staff.
It depends on the class! To teach our primary-advanced students classical ballet technique, we prefer them to wear pink tights with a black leotard and have their hair tightly secured in a bun. For most other technical dance classes, pink or tan tights with a leotard and hair secured tightly away from student's face is preferred. Depending on the class, athletic wear may be worn over student's leotard and tights. It may seem strict, but high expectations receive great results!
Our dedicated faculty is full of highly trained dance and acrobatic instructors. We take pride in our staff's ability to teach our students valuable life lessons as well as wonderful, long-lasting dance technique. Our staff is respectful and teaches every unique child in a way that works best for them. We cultivate an environment that will prepare students to lead successful lives and have been helping to create not just talented dancers, but well-rounded individuals, since we opened our doors in 1984.
At Joanne's Dance Extension, we strive to give everyone the opportunity to express themselves through dance. Our staff members have additional credentials to offer classes for those with special needs, and have been recognized many times for our different program's successes. Be it a mental health struggle, a disability, or anything in between; we offer classes for every student to experience the joys of dancing.

After begging her parents ceaselessly, Molly (Miss Molly) began her dance training at the age of nine at Dancin’ Feet in Canton, and instantly fell in love. Throughout her childhood, she found any opportunity to perform (school theater, choir, forcing her parents to endure self-choreographed “dance recitals” in the basement, etc.) and study dance, including the dance workshops at Joanne’s Dance Extension that she always looked forward to in the summers.
When it was time for her daughters to start dancing, she brought them to JDE because of the dancers’ lovely quality of movement, the studio’s family-friendly environment, the teachers’ obvious care for each student, and those amazing dance yearbooks she always envied growing up. Molly enjoys using her background in dance, music, and theater when teaching the studio’s younger students, and watching their natural creativity, musicality, and delightful silliness shine through as they dance.
